What is Access Control?
Access control is an electronic security service that controls who or what can enter a building or site.
It is a fundamental element of security that minimises risk for a business or organisation.
Access control limits access to buildings, rooms, and sites.
To secure a property, commercial and industrial businesses use electronic access control systems that rely on user credentials, access card readers, QR codes, auditing, and reports to track employees, contractors, and visitors’ access to restricted business locations, high-risk areas, and sensitive areas such as data centres.
Our systems incorporate access control readers or QR codes to restrict entry to rooms and buildings, as well as alarms and lockdown capabilities, to prevent unauthorised access, for example to high-risk areas.
We can also integrate our access control systems to many different building software systems, such as a world-class contractor management system powered by securepass.
Access control systems perform identification authentication and authorisation of users by evaluating required login credentials that can include passwords, personal identification numbers (PINs), biometric scans, QR codes, security tokens or other authentication factors.
Multifactor authentication which requires two or more authentication factors is often important as part of a multi-layered defence to protect the integrity of the access control systems.

What will Access Control do for your property?
At IDS Security we make Access Control easy!
Access control gives commercial and Industrial clients ultimate flexibility and control over their site’s security system by managing who can access specific areas – and at what time – while recording effective audit trails.
Building managers have a lot on their plate and ensuring that the building is secure is often one of their top priorities.
Unfortunately, many access control systems are outdated and difficult to manage, which can lead to security breaches.
If you or a facility manager you know are constantly complaining about…
😡 No oversight of who is coming in and out of the building/s they manage…
😡 Long, manual processes when it comes to updating access cards…
😡 Constantly failing intercoms…
😡 Being locked into the same provider…
…or anything else access related, then it’s time to have a conversation about upgrading their Access Control System!
Benefits include…
✅ Increased Security – If something happens and security wants to investigate who did it, the Access Control back-office keeps track of every person who came in and went out of the area where it happened. This will help security create a list of suspects.
✅ Increased Productivity – Many modern Access Control solutions are designed to not just control doors and gateways, but also things like high-speed barriers, turnstiles, motorised fences and parking gates.
✅ Reduced Costs – Many digital Access Control solutions can be integrated with a wide range of third-party applications and solutions. This can help save money on energy costs for the site. For example, the most sophisticated facility management solutions can identify when different areas of the site need heating or cooling.
Tips for selecting the right system for your needs
When selecting an access control system from a certified installer, they will know what types of Access are required for different areas to facilitate desired client outcomes.
Access control should be designed around your individual business outcome, not a one-size-fits-all.
Access control is costly enough.
Don’t cost yourself more with a shoddy system!
Access control systems help to regulate who can enter and exit a building or area. This is done through a variety of means, such as key cards, biometrics, or even just simple locks and keys.
But with so many options on the market, how do you know which access control system is right for you?
Here are IDS Security’s top three tips to help you select the best access control system for your needs:
1. Get a Risk Evaluation
The first step is to assess the risks associated with your facility. This will help you determine what level of security you need. Are you protecting sensitive data? Are you concerned about theft? Or are you just looking to keep unauthorised people out? Once you know the risks, you can start looking for an access control system that will mitigate them.
2. Consider Integrated Solutions
When it comes to security, it’s often best to go with an integrated solution. This means choosing a system that includes not only access control, but also other security measures such as CCTV and alarm systems. This way, you can be sure that your facility is well-protected from all angles.
3. Maximise Your Solution with Key Features
Once you’ve selected an access control system, be sure to take advantage of all the features it offers. For example, many systems come with the ability to track comings and goings. This can be useful for security purposes, but also just for keeping an eye on employee attendance. Other features to look for include the ability to remotely control the system and integration with other devices such as doorbells or intercoms.

What are the main reasons people get Access Control for their premises?
Clients install Access control when it’s time for them to control who can and can’t enter their property or areas in their buildings.
The growing trend for access control is fast becoming a key consideration for business owners, property developers and property owners alike.
With security more important than ever, business owners and property developers are always looking to ensure that their places of business or the properties they sell or rent are secure and that they can only be accessed by those that are authorised to access them.
There are many reasons to have Access Control for your business, property, or development, but at IDS Security, we’ve identified some of the key drivers for our customers.
1. Restrict Entry to Authorised Personnel
The biggest reason for Access Control is to ensure that only authorised personnel can gain entry into a building or development. This is done by giving each person their own keycard which can be programmed to only give them access to the areas they are authorised to enter. Access Control systems can also be integrated with CCTV so that you can see who is trying to gain entry and when.
2. Allows Contactless Entry
Another big reason for Access Control, especially during COVID times, is the ability to have contactless entry. This means that people don’t need to use their hands to open doors, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination. Access Control systems can be programmed to open doors automatically, or they can be set up so that people need to use their keycards to gain entry.
3. Creates Historical Activity Logs
Another big benefit of Access Control systems is that they create historical activity logs. This means that you can see who has accessed a building or development and when they did so. This is a valuable tool for security purposes, as it can help you to identify any patterns of behaviour or potential security breaches. For example if someone is constantly showing up late for work this will all be logged.
4. Eliminates the Need to install new locks
Finally, Access Control systems eliminate the need to install new locks. If you lose a key, or if someone leaves your employ, you can simply deactivate their keycard and issue a new one. This is a much simpler and more cost-effective solution than having to change the locks on a whole building or development.

What are common mistakes when installing an Access Control system (or designing the system)?
Often, we see that clients do not have a properly designed system and are not future-proofed. We see a lot of companies adding on to systems instead of upgrading where clients can create more operations efficiencies i.e., manage multi-sites off one platform
There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution to any building’s security.
However, when it comes to Access Control systems, there are certainly some common mistakes that people make.
1. Installing proprietary systems: A lot of businesses opt for Access Control systems that are proprietary, meaning they can only be used with that one specific brand or type of system. This can be a mistake for a few reasons. First, it limits your options if you ever need to upgrade or expand your system. Second, it can be more expensive in the long run, as you may have to replace the entire system if something breaks or needs to be updated.
2. Installing a system with locks that are not suitable for your doors or access points: Not all Access Control systems are created equal. Some are designed for interior doors, while others are better suited for exterior doors or gates. Make sure you choose a system that is designed for the specific type of door or access point you are using it for.
3. Attempting to self-manage the system: Access Control systems can be complex, and if you’re not experienced or properly trained on them, it’s easy to make mistakes that could jeopardise the security of your system. It can also become expensive having to call out techs every couple of weeks to help you out of a jam, or to access part of the system you can’t. However, the Installer should fully train you on the basic working of your system, like adding and cancelling cards, so you don’t have unnecessary and expensive callouts.
Why should I get IDS to install my Access Control instead of someone else? What do you do differently from the typical provider?
Installing a brand-new access control system or upgrading an old one can be very expensive, especially if you get the wrong advice.
Sometimes, you can’t even work with your existing system, so a whole new system needs to be purchased and installed.
It’s an issue we see right across the industry as the wrong advice was given from the start – a quick fix that didn’t cost a lot initially but costs more in the long run.
Access control systems are too frequently picked for what they can do today with no consideration for future needs.
At IDS Security we ensure we future proof your access control system at the time of design and installation is one of the best investments you can make, so with that in mind, here are three key considerations:
1. Potential for growth – Access control systems need to be able to grow with your business. Make sure the system you choose can support additional doors or access points as required.
2. Integration – Can the system integrate with multiple software platforms, such as, for example, the software that is used in your lift? This will become increasingly important as businesses look to adopt a more holistic approach to security.
3. Functionality – Is the system just for access control, or can it also integrate with other security systems such as CCTV and alarm systems?
By working with IDS Security and considering these three factors at the outset, you can save yourself a lot of money and headaches down the line.
