Recently we had a new client who wanted to change security company due to poor service, but their incumbent was holding them to ransom by refusing to give them their security codes.

Some security companies only give “user” access instead of “admin” access so you cannot log into CCTV, for example, and change the username and passwords or give it to another security company.

Top Tip: Before you accept a security quote, tell your security company that you require full admin access so your IT or Operations team can stay in control, that way if you need to change providers you can do it easily.

Most electronic security these days is network-based therefore it can have an adverse effect on cyber security if the wrong products are installed or if maintenance is neglected.

1. Your security installer should carry out regular firmware updates to safeguard against cyber attacks  

2.   Avoid cheap mass-produced products that connect with your network i.e. via cameras 

3.   Ensure you use camera vendors that produce their own chips sets (the brains of the camera) so you are not more vulnerable to cyber attacks

4.   Access control for your comms rooms is vital, you can then audit who goes in and out and prevent unwanted people from inserting USB directly into servers 

5.   Make sure you set strong passwords, often companies that install security leave default passwords for security systems that can be googled!
